LPA rejection: the complete guide
Last updated 22 August 2026
An LPA is a 24-page paper form signed by hand by up to seven people in a legally mandated order. If any of that goes wrong, the Office of the Public Guardian will not register it. This guide explains the most common reasons LPAs are rejected and what to do about each one.
Why so many LPAs are rejected
The OPG received 1,589,500 power of attorney applications in 2025-26 (OPG Annual Report and Accounts 2025-26, HC 447, July 2026). Which? obtained figures under Freedom of Information showing 50,918 rejections in 2023-24 (Which?, November 2024). The single biggest cause is getting the signing order wrong. There is no amend-and-resubmit route: if the form is rejected, the whole document must be re-executed from scratch.
